Keep Calm & Write Your - Dissertation

For those of you who have just completed your second year of your degree and all you can think about is next year, here is a post that will hopefully calm you down.

I would first like to start with congratulations, you have one more year left! Its your final year of your degree and your faced with a number; 10,000. It might look scary at first but after you dive in its just scary.

Being nervous and scared about your dissertation is a great sign. It means that your degree and your result means a lot to you. So your on the right path so far.

Now all you need to do is to stay focused, organised, optimistic and open minded.

I finished my degree in 2012. When I started my dissertation I was very nervous, so to calm my nerves I created a plan so I knew what I needed to do and how much time I had.

This blog post is not ideas or advice on what you should be writing in your disso or how you should be writing it. I am just passing on advice I was given and iDiyas I picked up through experience, which made the process of writing my dissertation easier and got me the grade i wanted.

1. Shout it out - 'I want a 1st'

The first most important thing i believe is to let your supervisor know exactly what you want.

Be open on the first meeting and let your supervisor know that you want a 1st and thats what your aiming for. Let them know that if you are working at a 2:2 or a 2:1 level, you want to know what you need to do to get to a 1st. Even if you have to move mountains, you are willing to work hard to achieve that grade.

The supervisor is not allowed to tell you what grade level your dissertation is at, therefore letting them know that you only want a 1st they will have to push you until the end.

I remember my supervisor and i where discussing the final amendments i needed to do before i handed in my final draft. Once i amended all that we discussed, i asked her is there anything else i need to do? She then answered it is perfect you don't need to change anything else.

Knowing I initially told her i want a 1st, i was confident when she told me it was perfect, I knew that if it was not at a 1st level she would have told me to do more. Thankfully i got a 1st.

2. Plan Plan Plan!!

When it came to my disso i write down everything i needed to do down to the last dot. You can never over plan. I printed a monthly and weekly calendar i found online and I wrote all the deadlines that where given to me and also made myself sub deadlines for those deadlines.

I know it sounds crazy, however i believed doing this made me calm and focused on what i needed to do.

You can use the organisation tool Trello to help make organising your work easier.

3. Relationship with your supervisor

When your writing your dissertation, your university will allocate a supervisor to help and guide you along the way. Your supervisor is also the first marker of your dissertation. This means their opinion on you and your work is very important.

I believe the relationship you build with your supervisor will have a big effect on your result.

This was my thought process; if you meet with your supervisor regularly and share the excitement of your research and plan for your work, the supervisor will also become invested in how the dissertation will turn out.

You will be working on this disso together. Even though its all your work, the supervisor will be advising you on what is best and therefore they will feel like its their work also.

If you are meeting your supervisor, ask them questions about the topic, and keep them up to date with your findings and how much time and work you are putting into the dissertation.

Email them drafts at 6am showing them you are waking up early and finishing late. By doing this they will see how much hard work you are putting into your dissertation, which will make you deserving of that 1st.

4. Go the extra mile

Your dissertation is your research. You will not only be graded on your findings and analysis, you will also be graded on how much effort you put.

If your marker sees that you are going the extra mile in each section of your dissertation, then they will see that you take your research seriously, you worked hard to do more and stand out.

How do you go the extra mile? You can do anything that will make your work stand out. Here are some examples of what i did; I created visuals in my research, for example diagrams, graphs and so on.

I got creative in my introduction, in my aim and objectives section i broke down how I will accomplish those aims. I broke down my conclusion section into conclusion and recommendation. So every conclusion had a recommendation right after it.

There are many ways you can go the extra mile and set yourself aside from others. Do some research and see what others have done and change it up to suit you. This does not count as copyrighting if you are only taking ideas from their ideas. You don't have to only look at dissertations on your subject, take some ideas from other ranges of dissertations.

People my disagree and say its all in your work, however in my opinion i think these little things do also help.

Hope this was helpful. If you have any questions i would be happy to answer, you can comment down bellow with your name or anonymously.

Young People VS World After Graduation

My first 'Thoughts' post is a rant! YOUNG PEOPLE VS WORLD AFTER GRADUATION

As a young person I believe we are beyond what categories or desk the world puts us in.
There are too many talented young people who work hard on getting knowledge for a job they may never get. Instead they are using their 3 - 4 year degrees on shop floors, behind counters, handing out leaflets or reading out survey.

My view on this world is to create your own. Not to wait for someone else to set your contract, pay, hours, holidays. Limit your ideas to a job description, you don't even want to do.

Don't settle for a job because you graduated many months ago and you are sick and tired of uploading your CV and cover letter.

Companies act like you are lucky they are considering you, but they are lucky your giving them your ideas and adding to their future success.

Am i the only one who feels like there are too many young people who worked so hard on a degree that now only seems like a paper sitting in their home.

I believe there is more we can do. This is 2014 and i believe we should think beyond job applications.

Here is my thought process. You are a brand, and what makes a brand successful; being the best in the market and knowing the people who can make you better. That is exactly what you should do; build your personal brand and your network.

I will be collecting some ideas on what the best way to do this is and posting it up as an iDiya.

The professional world as we know it is a mess. Too many graduates and not many jobs. To avoid it being your mess you have to do take matters into your own hands, not wait for your turn, if it comes.

You have to stay optimistic and believe in your capability. Don't settle and always know that you have the choice.

Thoughts to key.

The language of the future- Code

Well If you don't already know this about me I love the tech world. If I could go back in time my degree would be in computer science, but when I think about it I realise that I really just want both (coding and marketing.)

The reason why I want to learn how to code is so that I can bring my tech iDiyas to life. Trust me I have a few here and there.

Luckily it's 2014 and you can learn just about anything online. There are many resources out there that teach you different types of programming languages.

A friend of mine recommended Code Academy. After some research I am very excited about getting started.

Code Academy website launched in 2011. Initially it taught a short course on Javascript, and along the years it has expanded. It now offers courses on HTML, CSS, Ruby on Rails, jQuery, PHP and Python.

I will be starting with the basic language of creating a website which is also incorporates in other code: HTML. To find out what language you want to learn or start with, read this article by Life Hacker.

I'm sure most of you know the benefits of knowing how to code. I'm sure many of you intend or hope to learn. I hope majority of you follow that iDiya and start learning.

I will update you on my progress and include a review of Code Academy.

Until next time, remember it all starts with an iDiya.

Network with Meetup

Who you know unfortunately is as important as what you know these days. There are so many people living in the same city as you with the same skills on their CV, down to their hobbies.

The pile of graduates, postgraduates with photo shop, programming skills who speak more then one language is not exciting to employers anymore, it's just another pile of options.

To get your foot in any door is a dream for many. Most try, try and settle or fail. Having someone on the other side that can open the door halfway is what everyone should aim to have.

I'm sure you have heard it many times, but I shall say it again. Network! Meet people in your field and make real professional relationships. Going to a event and collecting business cards is not effective networking. You need to continue the communication.

I shall give you iDiyas of how you can build this professional relationship in another post.
This post is more about the easiest way to find the right people to have in your network. Not just find them, but also find them at a time where they are not distracted by their own professions. A time when they are mentally open to networking themselves.

How, Isn't really the question more like where?...

Meetup is an online social networking portal that facilitates offline group meetings all around the world. Meetup allows members to find and join groups unified by a common interest, such as politics, books, games, movies, careers or hobbies.

You can enter your city and the topic you want to meet about, and the website gives you a list of groups. Once you join the group the website allows your to view the member's short bio and you can even email the professionals. Most importantly you can view the meetup calendar and RSVP to events.

Meetup gives you the platform to network and build professional relationships, but it's up to you to leave a lasting impression and continue contact past exchanging business cards.

Watch my Secret Handshake video to find out more about networking via email.

Don't forget that it all starts with an iDiya.

The Secret Hand Shake

I wanted to share this iDiya with you all because it is a tool that you can use in every field of work and in life. Getting yourself in front of the right person is not easy. Professionals have success and with success comes lack of spare time. They might want to help but only get the chance to help a handful of those who ask.

The secret handshake teaches you how to communicate with these professionals in a language they understand and appreciate. It will help you build your networking pool and increase your success.

I shall say it time and time again, i am not a expert and i can not guarantee anything. I am just sharing my iDiya, which was kindly shared to me.

Remember it all starts with an iDiya.

The start of iDiya

First post, i am pretty excited!

This is a platform to share all ideas that are shared with me (Diya). I believe that ideas come from optimistic thoughts and open minds. If your mind is always open to all thoughts and all your thoughts are positive therefore you will have many ideas.

Share, share, share! iDiyas are meant to be shared.

There are 2 rules i set for this blog; always stay positive and be open minded.

May our light bulb always be lit.
